📍St Martin de Re, France 🇫🇷 When we were in La Rochelle, we took a drive over the long bridge to Ile de Ré to spend the afternoon there. There are a couple of villages on the island and we opted for lunch at La Marine on the port in St Martin. Not only is it a beautiful town, it is UNESCO world heritage site and was founded in the 8th century. These 17th century star-shaped fortifications were designed by Vauban and are still remarkably well preserved. In a couple of the pics you can see the famous island donkeys. They aren’t wearing the trousers they are known for, unfortunately. The locals made pants for them to protect them from the mosquitoes in the salt marshes. It’s such a lovely place and you can’t beat the seafood! And don’t forget to get some of the fleur de sel that is harvested on the island. My parents spent 4 days here the week before we arrived and didn’t want to leave.
