You may have already been guided by this uniquely colored bell tower, and you were right to do so.
Towering over 40 meters high, the bell tower of Saint-Étienne church is a jewel of Gothic architecture perched atop this equally distinctive building in Ars-en-Ré. Its unique colors are a sight to behold, attracting many a curious visitor every year.
In fact, don’t hesitate to go inside the church to admire the works it inspired, just like its two-tone spire. You’ll see just how unique this church is, thanks to its shape and its history!
First of all, let yourself be immersed in the monument, admiring it for a moment from the Place Carnot in the center of Ars, and don’t hesitate to take a photo if you feel like it.
Then approach the explanatory panel to the left of the building. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the history of this distinctive Gothic spire.
Then head for the central door to enter the church. Once you’ve passed through, take a look at the surprises awaiting you inside, before moving on.
Legend has it that the church was built in three stages over a period of almost 500 years! Hence the expression “the three churches of Ars”.
The Ars-en-Ré spire has the particularity of changing in many ways under different skies. Grey skies, for example, bring out its black and white colors!
Sunset also gives the spire a pleasant, almost soothing hue.
But to make your photo truly unique, head to the Ars cemetery to find a steeple-like grave that will add another dimension to the image, while the sky adds the finishing touch.
