To come to the Baleines lighthouse is to marvel at its grandeur. Listed as a historical monument, and with a range of over 50 km, making it one of France’s most powerful semaphores, at 57 metres high and 257 steps, it’s sure to impress young and old alike, with a breathtaking view of the north of the island and the infinite ocean.
Keep your eyes peeled at the top, and you might just catch a glimpse of Fort Boyard in the distance.
Built in 1849 to reinforce the action of the old tower built to Vauban’s plans, it was inaugurated in 1854, along with its counterpart, the Baleineaux lighthouse, at the other end of Pointe des Baleines.
The Old Tower Museum reveals the fascinating history of lighthouses and their construction methods.
It’s the perfect place to start your visit to the site, with an educational exhibition featuring multimedia sequences, panels and objects to enlighten young and old alike!
Once you’ve had your fill of the site, move closer to the coast to admire the three lighthouses, and let yourself be carried away by the atmosphere of the place, before finally beginning the ascent of our giant to finish in style.
The lighthouse got its name because many whales used to come ashore at Saint-Clément until around 100 years ago.
Throughout the year, two events make the Les Baleines lighthouse site even more unforgettable.
The first, in summer, combines grandeur and music: Jazz at the Lighthouse. In a magnificent setting, come and discover well-known and lesser-known artists and experience unforgettable moments in the shadow of the majestic lighthouse.
What about the European Heritage Days? Another annual highlight on the Saint-Clément-des-Baleines site, where for two days in September, numerous events bring the monument and its grounds to life even more, with treasure hunts and exceptional tours.
