Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve

Located in the heart of the salt marshes, the nature reserve is a natural paradise where birds are king!

Thousands of migratory birds flock here in spring and autumn, making it an interesting place to visit all year round.

At a glance

This remarkable reserve, managed by the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO), grew out of the former salt marshes from which people extracted salt in natural areas.

A haven of peace

Opened in 1980, the Lilleau des Niges nature reserve is dedicated to preserving its natural species. It is a veritable sanctuary for migratory birds. Managed by the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux, it’s a jewel of nature in the heart of the Fier d’Ars.

Venturing here is a call to marvel at the beauty of the landscape that surrounds us, far from civilization and urbanization. A maze of trails, accessible free of charge in all seasons, plunges you into the heart of this remarkable biodiversity. For nature lovers and those who want to get away from it all, the nature reserve will live up to your expectations!

Familiarize yourself with the area and explore

Before heading out on the trails, the first step is to visit the Maison du Fier, a fun museum space housed in a former salt shed.

Here you’ll be immersed in the natural world of the Retais, discovering the richness of its flora and fauna. An ideal place for children!

Only then can you fully appreciate the surprises and riches of Lilleau des Niges, the link between the Arctic and Africa for many migratory birds. Then set off on the two-kilometre trail, far from the hustle and bustle of the world.

Did you know?

Access to the nature reserve is forbidden: the trail can be found to the south of the reserve.
You can hire binoculars from the Maison du Fier for birdwatching.

Discover the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux and its activities

In addition to discovering the Maison du Fier and the trail, LPO members organize themed outings for birdwatchers.
With the professionalism of a guide, you can admire a wide variety of birds, local plants and, above all, learn more about the foreshore, a natural area full of surprises.
There’s a choice of nature walks, observation sessions and even twilight outings, where life is different and dazzling in new colors.
