Present on the Ile de Ré since at least the XIᵉ century, in the Middle Ages, the island’s salt marshes made it an ideal land for the exploitation of white gold.
The island’s salt marshes hide many treasures, the best known of which is obviously its salt. But there’s another, more ephemeral treasure worth the trip: their colors. Venture into these magnificent landscapes when the weather is fine and the flowers are in full bloom, and admire the sumptuous reflections of blue, green, pink and yellow, like living paintings.
It’s a call to enchantment in the midst of a rich and generous nature.
On foot or by bike, take in this postcard-perfect setting and appreciate its every color and aspect. These basins have been skilfully dug out of the clay so that water flows by gravity from one to the other.
Then, head off to the salt marsh eco-museum to learn more about the history of salt farming and the production techniques used in the retais salt marshes.
