Les Portes-en-Ré

A haven of peace nestled between ocean and salt marshes

This village offers a gentle way of life, authenticity and the feeling of being at the end of the world. It’s also an unspoilt commune in the heart of a protected environment, bordered by majestic salt marshes and a pine forest, typical of the north of the Ile de Ré, and ideal for beautiful, relaxing walks.

The promise of an ocean horizon and unspoilt nature

Taking the road to Les Portes-en-Ré means choosing a stay in the heart of nature, in unspoilt countryside far from the stress of the city, to experience great moments of peace and quiet. The village is located not far from the Lilleau des Niges Nature Reserve, a veritable paradise for thousands of birds from Europe, Africa and North America, which are welcomed here all year round: white stilts, brant, elegant avocets, little egrets, bluebirds and more.

Surrounded by remarkable beaches, Les Portes-en-Ré is a small village that invites you to get away from it all. Here you can discover the famous Trousse Chemise beach, first sung by Charles Aznavour in 1962. Or the beaches of La Patache at the entrance to Fier d’Ars, La Loge with its superb view over the not-so-distant Vendée, or Petit Bec, a discreet but renowned surf spot.

A pretty, quiet little village in winter, it comes alive in summer around its Place de la Liberté. A few restaurants, terraces and shops give it a pleasant, cheerful yet intimate atmosphere, with pretty houses nestling at the end of charming flower-filled alleyways. A market full of flavors and colors is held around the square every summer day, and is a meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

The village’s name comes from the time when it was called Les Portes d’Ars. It was the preferred point of entry to the island of Ars by sea, before it was linked to Ré!
