Centuries of civilization

Chapels and churches, medieval relics, bitterns and marine ex-votos, fish locks and military fortifications, you’ll travel through history as you discover these cultural and architectural treasures.

A richly endowed island inhabited for thousands of years

When you come to Ré, you can be sure of discovering a whole host of fascinating places. From the most prestigious military buildings to fish locks, alleyways, wells, mills, lighthouses and other notable residences, the island of Ré boasts a rich and diverse heritage that deserves to be protected and enhanced. In addition to the many sites of interest, the island of Ré is also home to a wealth of small heritage sites, nestled in the heart of villages, narrow streets, churches and much more!

A land of legends, coveted for its riches and geostrategic location in the Charente estuary, the island of Ré has blossomed over the centuries in its originality and uniqueness. Its vineyards, which date back to Antiquity, and its salt marshes, which date back to the Middle Ages, now form its most important gastronomic heritage. At the same time, oyster farming and potato cultivation made their appearance: two products recognized today for their excellence.

Discovering the island of Ré and its inhabitants will show you just how strong and endearing the island’s identity is. From its origins to the present day, it has never ceased to grow, and the enhancement of its heritage is proof of this attachment to its heritage. This journey will take you on a tour of the sites that are essential milestones in the island’s history, as well as the major works of art that make up the exceptional heritage of this unique island, which has been awarded the “Pays d’art et d’histoire” label.

First island to receive the "Pays d'art et d'histoire" label

Since July 26, 2012, the Ile de Ré has been the first French island territory to be awarded the “Pays d’art et d’histoire” label. This label, awarded by the French Minister of Culture, recognizes areas that are actively involved in raising awareness of their heritage, architecture and living environment. More than a simple distinction, it is accompanied by a genuine development project, a guarantee of the Ile de Ré’s interest in preserving and promoting its local and historical heritage.

Guided tours, exhibitions, publications and conferences, as well as an awareness-raising program for young visitors, organized by the Communauté de Communes de l’île de Ré, are the perfect opportunity to discover the region’s heritage interest through high-quality mediation.

The island of Ré has developed over the centuries and through geographical changes. Originally divided into four parts, it flourished with the agricultural and aquacultural crops brought over by Cistercian monks in the Middle Ages. It was at this time that Ré became a unique, high-quality terroir recognized by all, including the surrounding kingdoms. From these exchanges with the outside world, the island forged its own identity and traditions.

The history of the island, from its origins to the present day, gives the area an air of the petite histoire de France, albeit to a lesser extent. Ideal for learning more about the country’s destiny, it will also be a magnificent playground for children, who will have a wide choice of activities offered by the island’s museums and other cultural venues. So, whether you’re with family, friends or a couple, learning more about Ré’s past is all in good fun.
