Your morning in the heart of the salt marshes in the north of the island

The only way to cross the salt marshes is by bike! If you haven’t brought your own bikes, don’t panic, there are plenty of rental companies on the island offering a wide range of two-wheelers, both mechanical and electric.

Once you’re equipped, head off to the Maison du Fier, a museum space at the heart of the Lilleau des Niges reserve. Visit this fascinating site to discover the richness of its flora and fauna through its many facets: dunes, salt marshes, forests, villages, foreshore, etc.

Once your visit is over, get back on your bike and discover the beauty of the bird species in the salt marshes of the Ile de Ré.

End your morning with an oyster tasting in an oyster hut in the heart of the salt marshes.

A sporting and cultural afternoon in Loix, the peninsula of the Retais

After sampling some delicious local produce, get back on your bike and head for the village of Loix, a veritable peninsula in the middle of the island. To get there, you’ll have to cross the salt marshes before arriving in this intimate, family-run village. In the heart of the salt marshes, before you reach the village, you’ll come face to face with the salt marsh eco-museum, a fascinating nature tour awaiting you before you reach the village.

Once you’ve arrived in Loix, do you fancy a bit of sport in the middle of the Fier d’Ars? Paddle, canoe and kayak are just waiting for you! And don’t forget to relax on the Grouin beach.

In the evening, round off your day with a visit to another oyster hut to watch the sun set and enjoy a local aperitif.

How long have salt marshes been present on the island?

Since at least the XIᵉ century, during the Middle Ages, the presence of salt marshes has been noted, enabling the Ile de Ré to be renowned for its production of white gold using ancestral techniques!
