Day 1

Getting your bearings and discovering the island

Morning
The best way to get around the island is by bike. Many rental companies offer pet-friendly equipment, so you can take your faithful companion with you wherever you go. Join us in the village of your choice for a tour of the market, where dogs on a leash are welcome.

Afternoon
Hop on your bike and head for Saint-Martin for a stroll along the harbor, the narrow streets and the fortifications built by Vauban. Dogs on a leash are welcome in all villages on the island. If you and your dog are not claustrophobic, as the stairs are very narrow, the bell tower of Saint-Martin is accessible to leashed dogs. It offers a splendid view of the village and the ocean, and costs just €3.

Day 2

Beaches, forests and a visit to La Flotte and its abbey

The Ile de Ré is renowned for its wide beaches and natural spaces. However, there are a few rules you need to observe to make the most of your stay with your faithful companion. Certain beaches are forbidden or restricted to dogs, depending on the season. You’ll find a detailed list of all dog-friendly beaches and their conditions.

Morning
This is the best time to go to the beach with your dog. However, if the season doesn’t allow it, the forest is the best place for your dog to run, play and let off steam.

Afternoon
After a morning of sport, enjoy an afternoon of sightseeing in La Flotte. From the harbor to the narrow streets and the Châteliers abbey, a lovely walk or bike ride awaits you. Further afield, Fort La Prée also accepts dogs on guided or self-guided tours.

Day 3

The idyllic north of the island

Morning
Does your furry friend love the great outdoors, where he can get out and about and discover all kinds of curiosities? Head for the salt marshes, where idyllic landscapes and birds meet. Take the opportunity to visit the salt marsh eco-museum and discover the production secrets of our salt marsh farmers. Dogs on a leash are permitted throughout the visit.

Afternoon
The Phare des Baleines is one of Charente-Maritime’s most famous monuments. Even if your pooch isn’t allowed inside the lighthouse, you’ll still be able to observe it from below, and even visit the lighthouse garden, which is open to leashed dogs. The north of the island is also famous for its Lilleau des Niges ornithological reserve, where migratory birds come to rest.

Dogs are welcome on the Ile de Ré! Nevertheless, here is a list of beaches
and detailed conditions for access.
