Bathing water quality

Bathing Water Quality” certification

To guarantee quality bathing water, a number of villages on the Ile de Ré have adopted a rigorous surveillance policy, with beaches that have been awarded the “Bathing Water Quality” certification.

What does certification guarantee?

The “Démarche qualité Eaux de Baignade” certification guarantees bathers good-quality bathing water. This certification enables municipalities to comply with the requirements of European Directive 2006/7/EC, taking into account real-time public information and crisis management in the event of pollution. The certification ensures the quality of bathing water, in line with responsible management practices.

The municipality with this certification is able to inform bathers of water quality in real time, and to prohibit bathing in the event of pollution thanks to regular analyses, to inform the public, and then to rapidly authorize them to bathe, as soon as pollution management is complete.

Bathing Water Quality” certification is currently the only standard that lets you know if your future bathing area is safe.

The beaches of Ile de Ré

Bathing waters are checked twice a week. These controls are used to prohibit or authorize bathing and water sports activities.

On the Ile de Ré, as in all communes involved in this approach, we apply the principle of “open beach: quality bathing water”.

In the event of suspicion, a bathing area may be closed to users while awaiting the results, with the possibility of subsequently authorizing it as soon as possible.

Most of the time, water quality on the Ile de Ré is excellent, as the Agence Régionale de Santé (Regional Health Agency) regularly attests: it poses no danger to health.
