Going on holiday with your pet

Enjoy the beach with your dog

Dogs are perfect companions for your stay on the Ile de Ré.

However, there are a few rules to be observed to preserve the quality of the beaches. Dogs on the beaches of the Ile de Ré may be allowed freely, at certain times, on or off leash, or they may not be allowed at all.

Here’s a list of authorizations for each village, so that you can enjoy the beach with your dog in a respectful manner:

  • Rivedoux-Plage

Dogs are allowed on a leash on all beaches (except South Beach) from 8pm to 10am. Only guide dogs are allowed, on a leash, on all beaches.

Dogs are not allowed on the south beach all year round.

  • Sainte-Marie-de-Ré

Access is permitted from October to April.

  • La Flotte

    Year-round ban on all beaches.

  • Saint-Martin-de-Ré

    Year-round ban on all beaches.

  • Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré
    • Dogs are allowed on Les Gouillauds beach (between Les Grenettes and Gros Jonc).
    • Le Petit Sergent: dogs are tolerated for 100 m west of the beach.
    • Tolerated, leashed and under the responsibility of their owner, on all beaches from October 1ᵉʳ to March 31.

Total ban from April 1 to September 30 (Article 17 of 12/2010) on the length of Gros Jonc beach up to Petit Sergent beach.

  • La Couarde-sur-Mer

Total ban from June 1ᵉʳ to September 30 and during all school vacations in all zones.

  • Loix

    Year-round ban on all beaches.

  • Ars-en-Ré

    Year-round ban on all beaches.

  • Saint-Clément-des-Baleines

They are authorized from June 15 to September 15 from 7pm to 9am on the Conche-des-Baleines and Côte Sauvage beaches.

  • Les Portes-en-Ré

Authorized from 8pm to 10am from June 1ᵉʳ to September 30 – Authorized without restriction the rest of the year.

from June 1ᵉʳ to September 30 prohibited from 10am to 8pm.

Why are dogs banned from beaches?

Dogs are often banned from beaches for safety and hygiene reasons.
But did you also know that our dog friends, when they run on the beach or leave their faeces there, cause serious problems for wildlife? Keeping your dog on a leash, and taking a short detour in front of a flock of birds to leave them in peace, means preserving the future beauty of our beaches.

Did you know?

Gravelots, small birds that have become rare, nest at the top of beaches and lay their eggs in the sand, making them very vulnerable.
Walkers and dogs are all sources of disturbance that can destroy their nests. So it’s vital to take special care not to harm these harmless animals.

Walking your dog in the forest?

When taking a walk in the forest, it can be tempting to untie our pets. But this seemingly harmless gesture can have a significant impact on wildlife.

All year round, dogs must remain under their master’s supervision and not stray more than 100 metres.

  • In spring, regulations become stricter: from April 15 to June 30 each year, a ministerial decree (up to date as of April 16, 2021) requires dog owners to keep their pets on a leash outside forest paths*. Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to 750 euros.

*Forest paths are understood in the broadest sense to include forest roads, paths or trails, in particular GR trails, but also all footpaths. However, forest partitions, firebreaks and plot boundaries are not considered to be paths.

Contact your local town hall

Get in touch with your local mayor’s office, as trapping pests in hunting reserves may be subject to an annual ban (by municipal decree and depending on local hunting associations!).
