The site of La Prée was a landing pier between La Rochelle et Ré until the middle of the 19th century and the location of the first royal fortification in 1626.

Since it was a major work for the reconquest of the island from the English army in 1627, the fort was a link in the encirclement strategy of La Rochelle planned by Louis XIII and Richelieu. This was the only military building maintained immediatly after the vistory over La Rochelle in 1628, this eminent example of fortification...
