The site of La Prée was a landing pier between La Rochelle et Ré until the middle of the 19th century and the location of the first royal fortification in 1626.
Since it was a major work for the reconquest of the island from the English army in 1627, the fort was a link in the encirclement strategy of La Rochelle planned by Louis XIII and Richelieu.
