The old tower, just in front of the Baleines lighthouse, was built on the orders of Colbert and was in operation from 1682.

It was designed to serve as a sea wall (27 metres high) and as a maritime traffic surveillance point. At night, its fire was fuelled by fish oil and then by charcoal.
Replaced by the Phare des Baleines in 1854, it was listed as a historic monument in 1904!
The museum is located in the building at the foot of the old Whale Tower.
