Roger Bonnin Square and the War Memorial were inaugurated on 3 September 1922 and have just celebrated their centenary. They were restored in 2018 on the occasion of the centenary of the end of the First World War.
The monument to the dead of La Couarde sur Mer was designed by the architect Jules Alexandre Godefroy, a long-time summer resident of La Couarde. The park is named after the only son of Gaston Bonnin (who was the village teacher), Roger, an airman who died in combat in 1917. The architect called on his friend from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Aimé Octobre, who also won the Prix de Rome, to create the sculpture.
"This monument reminds us that the enemy was stopped by the heroic valour of our Poilus. The German imperial eagle broke its head on the wall they erected with their chest on the road of invasion" Aimé Octobre.
