At the end of the 1930s, the island was still a real island, with no bridge to carry water to homes. So the people of Rivedous needed a way to get water. A small hand pump was installed a few metres from the current fountain. It was used to distribute water to the whole village. It was located on a dirt track that was frequently used by carts, and was used to fill the cisterns used to sulphate the vines.
