Come and admire the Tourette well at Portes-en-Ré
On this small square in the rue de Trousse Chemise, there is a well with two entrances in the shape of a ‘sugar loaf’, built from local rubble extracted from the limestone quarries. Its turret protected the water from dust blown in by the wind. Over time, the shape of the dome changed according to the craftsmen involved, and the stones were not always visible. The wooden system that once supported the dome has been replaced by two large stones.
