Surfing is widespread on the Ile de Ré

You’ll find plenty of spots to have fun and (re)discover this thrilling sport.
Whether you’re a board enthusiast or a wave specialist, the island of Ré is the ideal surfing destination. Safe, human-sized waves and unspoilt areas, the spots on the island are ideal for water sports.

  • Rivedoux-Plage

    Spot Rivedoux plage Sud

    • Special feature: only works in very high swells
  • Sainte-Marie-de-Ré

    Spot des Grenettes

    • Special feature: the most famous spot on the island for beginners and advanced riders.
    • Level: ideal for beginners and longboarders
    • Please note: waves roll off reef*.
  • Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré

    Spot des Gouillauds

    • Special features: accessible only at high tide
    • 5-minute walk and 10-minute row to the peak
    • Note: waves are long and easy to surf

    Gros Jonc spot

    • Special features:
      • Adjacent to the swimming area
      • Ideal for families and beginners
      • Waves roll over sand at high tide and rocks at low tide
  • La Couarde-sur-Mer

    Spot de la Pergola

    • Level: Advanced surfers; not suitable for beginners
    • Please note: waves are Beach Break*, very fast, powerful and potentially dangerous; possibility of tubes.
  • Ars-en-Ré

    Spot at Pointe du Grignon

    • Please note: surfing is only permitted at high tide (low tide: rocks).
  • Saint-Clément-des-Baleines

    Spot at Plage de la Conche des Baleines

    • Features: fast, powerful waves up to 3 m high
    • Not recommended for beginners
  • Les Portes-en-Ré

    Lizay spots

    • Special feature: small spot for experienced surfers only
    • Note: waves roll off the reef* to the left and right

    Spot du Petit Bec

    • Particularity: this is where the swell is best captured.
    • Waves are hollow*.
    • Note: this spot is a beach break

    Spot de la Loge

    • Special feature: only accessible at high tide

Surf schools

Several surf schools offer courses for all levels, from beginner to expert. Supervised by certified instructors, you can learn the basics or perfect your technique in an exceptional natural setting.
